See Michael Caine Will Get His Revenge When Harry Brown Hits DVD August 31st
Based on Harry Brown’s $1.5 million haul at the domestic box office and the fact that the film only made it to 67 theaters, I’m going to guess few of you saw the film. Well, come the end of summer you’ve got no excuse for missing out on this one because Sony Pictures Home Entertainment is set to release the film on DVD and Blu-ray August 31st.
Michael Caine stars as Harry Brown, a man who’s hit a particularly tough point in his life. After his wife passed away, he's been living alone in his apartment in a council estate in South London, an area notorious for violence. Harry isn’t pleased to see area youths assaulting other locals, but he's fine keeping quiet and taking the long road to work to avoid confrontation. That all changes when the kids cross the line, so much so that they create a burning desire within Harry to fight back...and fight back he does.
Harry Brown is a fantastic film, but it’s not for everyone. It’s extremely violent, and a handful of moments might be hard for some to stomach, but otherwise, this is a Michael Caine performance not to be missed. This is certainly Caine’s film, but there are also a handful of impressive turns from his supporting cast, including Emily Mortimer as the D.I. keeping an eye on Harry while he’s on his vigilante romp, David Bradley as Harry’s pal, Leonard Attwell, and Ben Drew as the thug ringleader, Noel.
Regardless of how much I enjoyed this film, I’ve got to admit it’s not worth dropping the extra cash on the Blu-ray version, even though it only costs $30.95 as compared to $27.96 for the DVD. Both will come with the same bonus material: commentary with Caine, director Daniel Barber, and producer Kris Thykier, and some deleted scenes. Sony has yet to reveal the box art, but I’m guessing the film’s U.S. poster will make up the front cover, similar to what was done in the U.K.
