Sony Launches "Screen Classics By Request" On-Demand DVD Program
Even with the thousands of movies that have been restored and released on DVD over the past couple of decades, there are still many more titles that have never made the jump to the format for whatever reason. If you've got a favorite that you've been holding onto a cherished VHS copy of, well, you might just be in luck if it's a Columbia film. Sony has launched its new Screen Classics by Request program, which works more or less like a print-on-demand service does for books.
Here's how it works. You can visit the program's website, browse their catalogue, then order up a custom DVD of any of the available titles. Each of the DVDs costs a flat $19.94, plus shipping. Sadly, these are strictly DVD, so you can't get Blu-ray copies...at least not yet. Warner Home Video and Universal have already launched similar programs, and it wouldn't surprise me to see others following suit. As is made evident by today's news that Best Buy will no longer be stocking DVDs, shelf space is at a premium these days, and this sort of publish-on-demand program just makes good financial sense.
Sony will be adding new titles to the catalogue each month, so keep checking the website if you're interested.
