Sony Rolling Out 3D Blu-Rays This Summer
Clearly, when a movie makes a billion dollars at the box office, people take notice. With Avatar still raking in the cash and stirring up buzz, 3D has become even more of a hot commodity than it was before. We reported last week on Toshiba's partnership with RealD to introduce 3D-capable televisions into the market during 2010, and now Sony has announced that they're mounting that bandwagon as well, with 3D Blu-rays planned to hit the market around the same time as their own 3D hardware.
When introducing new tech to the public, it's important to make a big impression, and Sony apparently thinks that the best way to make that impression is with precipitating cheeseburgers and spaghetti tornadoes. Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs will be the first 3D Blu-ray out the door from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, timed to coincide with their first wave of 3D TVs and Blu-ray players this summer. They haven't announced any details of the release beyond confirming that it's happening, so stay tuned to DVD Blend and we'll bring you more info when we have it.
What do you guys think? I know plenty of people who haven't even upgraded to Blu-ray yet. Is 3D the wave of the future or just a passing trend? I say if it gets us closer to holodeck technology, I'm all for it. Here's the press release with all the details.
