Universal Unveils Blu-ray Plans
It’s been a while coming, but Universal Studios has finally conceded the HD DVD format and officially announced their plans for Blu-ray. At first glance, it would appear the studio is entering with a fizzle, as this year’s apocalyptic dud Doomsday will be the studios first released Blu-ray disc. Thankfully that’s not the only announced title, and the others are a bit more promising.
The studio is going to combine its entry into the former competition for high definition with a cash-in on one of its summer blockbuster attempts. On July 22nd you’ll be able to get the Mummy trilogy (The Mummy, The Mummy Returns, and The Scorpion King) on Blu-ray disc. Universal has already slated The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor for a Blu-ray release before the end of the year.
For those who picked Heroes up on HD DVD and enjoyed the clarity of the high definition format there’s good news: Heroes - Season Two will see a Blu-ray release on August 26th. The studio will also put out Season One, so you may have to buy those discs again, but at least they’ll both be available on the same format.
Other titles announced include American Gangster, Knocked Up, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Miami Vice, End of Days, U-571, Land of the Dead, and this year’s releases The Incredible Hulk, Wanted, Hellboy II: The Golden Army, and Mamma Mia!.
