The Water Horse Comes Home In April
I can’t say I had much interest in The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep. Even when it was shifted into a more family-friendly Christmastime theatrical release, the trailers never really sold me on the movie. Like it or not, the movie is now headed for DVD, and not a low-cost bare bones version either. Coming April 8th, The Water Horse will be hitting stores in both a two-disc special edition DVD and Blu-ray versions.
If you missed the listless trailers, the titular “water horse” is what most of us would know as the Loch Ness monster. The movie tells the story of how it came to live in Loch Ness in a story reminiscent of Free Willy or E.T..
The DVD will include widescreen and full frame versions of the movie, as well as deleted scenes and six featurettes. The Blu-ray disc gets the added bonus of a virtual Water Horse game, described as “an exclusive interactive online experience that allows participants to grow and care for their own virtual water horse.”
Here’s the rundown on the bonus features for this April 8th release:
- Bonus Materials
- Deleted Scenes
- Creating Crusoe - an exploration of the physical and special effects that went into creating the water horse, Crusoe
- Myths and Legends - a mixture of thoughts and opinions about the origins of the Water Horse myth - does he really he exist?
- Setting the Scene - a look at the production design and the different locations used to create an authentic Scottish environment
- The Characters - the cast and director Jay Russell discuss the characters from the film and the challenges of playing them
- The Story - director Russell discusses the process of bringing Dick King-Smith's book to the screen; and
- Water Work: Creating the Water Horse - shows Alex Etel’s amazing work underwater to create one of the most difficult scenes in the movie.
- The Water Horse: Virtual Crusoe Game (Blu-ray only)
