Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild Is Hiding A Clever Ocarina Of Time Easter Egg
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is a big, big game, with a heck of a lot of small touches and Easter eggs tucked away for series fans to discover. And even though the game's Trials of the Sword DLC has been out for nearly a year, we're only just hearing about a pretty fantastic in-game reference that points back to Ocarina of Time.
While we don't doubt many Zelda vets noticed this themselves, it's something that had completely escaped our attention until a recent reddit post (via Polygon) popped up and laid out the details. The image above comes from the Zelda wiki page, and it gives you a good idea of what user kamuilyn discovered. As they note in the original post, this could be considered a light spoiler for those who have not completed the Breath of the Wild DLC just yet. So, yeah, you've been warned.
Anyway, when you get to the chamber where the Master Sword is kept in the Trials of the Sword DLC, you'll notice that a collection of seven mysterious figures watch over the legendary piece of cutlery. Anyone who has completed a temple in Breath of the Wild will notice these figures, as one watches over the reward at the end of each puzzle.
Having seen so many of those figures, it's no surprise that many players start to take them for granted and don't really give them a good, hard look like kamuilyn did. As the reddit post points out, this particular group of figures is actually posed in the same way as the seven sages from the Nintendo 64's Ocarina of Time. Princess Zelda's sage pose is accounted for, alongside characters Saria, Nabooru, Impa, Rauru, Princess Ruto and Darunia.
That's a pretty cool catch and just goes to show how much time and attention was poured into Breath of the Wild. We're sure Nintendo would prefer folks keep discovering stuff like this on their own, but it almost makes us want a sort of director's commentary for the game, explaining how the history of the Zelda series helped shape Breath of the Wild, especially in small ways like this that might have otherwise gone unnoticed.
As for the future of the Switch title, we're still unclear on whether or not Nintendo considers Breath of the Wild "finished." You can never be too certain about that kind of thing these days, so it wouldn't surprise us if Nintendo decided to offer another DLC season pass with some extra modes, temples, content and the like to uncover. The second and final part of the original DLC season pass launched this past winter, so we're thinking E3 might be good timing to announce additional adventures for Link and his pals. Then again, that could always turn out to be nothing but wishful thinking.
