Rey Mysterio Is Back As WWE 2K19's Pre-Order Bonus Character

Each and every year there's a special bonus added to the WWE 2K games. For a while now WWE and 2K have been giving gamers some special playable characters, including icons like Sting, or industry-changing figures like The Ultimate Warrior or Goldberg. Well, this year the company decided to bring back one of their most popular WWE superstars to ever grace the squared circle, and it's none other than the incomparable Rey Mysterio Jr. You'll be able to unlock the lucha libre high-flyer right out of the box by pre-ordering WWE 2K19.

The news was confirmed through a tweet over on the official WWE Games Twitter account, which revealed that if you pre-order the game right now, you'll get instant access to Rey Mysterio Jr., who has finally made his return to the WWE after being absent for years.

The pre-order was revealed shortly after WWE and 2K Games revealed the cover athlete for this year's annual outing, which features the current WWE Smackdown champion, AJ Styles. The cover athlete announcement came shortly after Styles retained the title at this past year's Money In The Bank pay-per-view.

The WWE 2K19 pre-order for Rey Mysterio, however, is in celebration of the high-flyer who had an explosive run with the company from 2002 up through 2015. He spent 13 years with there, winning multiple world championships, tag team championships and other accomplishments while working for the WWE.

His run with the WWE wasn't without controversy, however. Mysterio spent a lot of time on the sidelines due to mounting injuries racked up from the grueling schedule and hard-hitting matches with other WWE superstars.

From 2015 up to 2018, Mysterio worked for other promotions, keeping busy but dealing with a far less demanding schedule. At the start of the year, however, the luchadore legend made a return to the WWE at the Royal Rumble to a huge ovation from the crowd, while donning his classic gear and mask.

A lot of fans hoped that Mysterio would have another title opportunity run with the WWE, but things didn't quite work as planned and his only other appearance for the company was at the Greatest Royal Rumble. Since then Mysterio headed back to the indie circuit, but was recently revealed as the special pre-order bonus for WWE 2K19.

While it may not seem like it, these games have the power to bring dream matches to life. It was thanks to Bill Goldberg being featured on the cover of WWE 2K17 as a pre-order bonus that eventually led to a match between him and Brock Lesnar at Survivor Series, which then culminated in a short WWE title run for Goldberg that ended at Wrestlemania.

Could Rey Mysterio see a similar comeback story thanks to being featured as a pre-order bonus in WWE 2K19? Well, it all depends on the buzz generated from the announcement. You can look to get your hands on Mysterio and the rest of the WWE roster when WWE 2K19 launches this October for PS4, Xbox One and PC.
