Sony will be releasing a new Spider-Man film next summer and surprise surprise, it will be accompanied by a video game. The Amazing Spider-Man game is in development at Beenox.
The movie is a reboot of the franchise, and follows high school student Peter Parker as he develops his newfound super powers. The game takes place after these events. Therefore, gamers won't need to suffer through the origin story - Peter Parker will be Spider-Man right off the bat. This also means that playing the game won't spoil the plot of the film, or vice versa.
Amazing Spider-Man will let players roam New York City freely. A new Web Rush mechanic will let players "pull off a vast array of moves never before possible." I guess they're trying to make the game show more of Spider-Man's acrobatic abilities.
The game's original story is being penned by television writer Seamus Kevin Fahey. Fahey has some solid nerd credentials, having written episodes of Spartacus: Gods of the Arena and Battlestar Galactica. The story will take players all across Manhattan and into the sewers below.
The platforms for Amazing weren't announced. Beenox's previous Spider-Man game, Shattered Dimensions, was released for the DS, PC, PS3, Wii, and Xbox 360. Expect a similarly wide release for Amazing. Maybe they'll make a version for the upcoming PS Vita handheld.
The first trailer for Amazing will air during Spike TV's Video Game Awards. The awards ceremony will air live on Saturday, December 10th at 8PM EST.
The Amazing Spider-Man film will be in theaters on July 3rd. The game will probably arrive within weeks, if not days, of the movie's premiere.
