Ubisoft revealed the first gameplay footage from Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag this afternoon. It shows Captain Edward Kenway engaging in all sorts of mischief throughout the Caribbean.
Previously released screenshots showed Edward diving for sunken treasure. As it turns out, that was no mere cutscene. Players will be controlling Edward as he swims along the ocean floor in search of hidden riches.
AC4 builds on the wilderness exploration of AC4. Because the game is set in the Caribbean rather than the American frontier, though, it's a radically different environment. Players will have to traverse thick jungles. Fortunately Edward is the sprightly sort who can run along tree branches, allowing him to avoid thick brush.
A good portion of the trailer is devoted to ship battles. The game is focused on the Golden Age of Piracy so naval combat figures to be a large part of the experience. It's not immediately clear how AC4 ship battles will vary from their AC3 counterparts.
Assassin's Creed 4 will launch in this fall on current- and next-gen consoles.
