Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag brings players back to the early 18th century, an era known as the Golden Age of Piracy. A new trailer from Ubisoft details some of the history behind this violent time period.
In 1714, the War of Spanish Succession between several European powers drew to a close. These nations employed privateers, independent ships who were authorized to attack foreign shipping - essentially state-sponsored pirates. When the war was over, though, these privateers suddenly found themselves out of work. Many of the privateers turned to a life of piracy.
Edward Kenway, the protagonist of AC4, is one of these former privateers. He leads a crew of sea dogs in treasure-hunting journeys throughout the Caribbean and rubs elbows with the likes of Blackbeard and Charles Vane. Soon he finds himself caught up in a centuries-old war between the Assassins and Templars.
AC4 is due in October on the PC and consoles. If you pre-order, you can get access to a VIP program called The Watch.
