Robert Griffin III won't be alone on the cover of NCAA Football 13. He'll be accompanied by Barry Sanders, the Hall of Fame running back and fellow Heisman Trophy winner.
RG3's co-cover athlete was decided by fan voting on Facebook. Sanders beat out the following Heisman winners for the honor:
- Former University of Southern California running back Marcus Allen
- Former Boston College quarterback Doug Flutie
- former The Ohio State University running back Eddie George
- former The University of Michigan wide receiver Desmond Howard
- former University of Georgia running back Herschel Walker
- former Florida State University quarterback Charlie Ward
- former University of Houston quarterback Andre Ware.
Sanders always seemed like the odds-on favorite. Some of the other players on the list were enormously successful in the NFL (Marcus Allen in particular) but Sanders is arguably the best RB to ever play in the league. The other guys simply couldn't compete with his list of accolades.
I like the idea of pairing a recent Heisman winner and upcoming draft pick (RG3) with an older Heisman winner who became a Hall of Famer. The Heisman isn't always an indicator of NFL success (see Dayne, Ron) and time will tell whether or not Griffin lives up to the hype. However, Sanders' presence on the cover reminds us that some Heisman winners do go on to bigger and better things.
NCAA Football 13 will arrive on the PS3 and Xbox 360 on July 10th.
