DICE formally revealed Battlefield 4 last night with a 17-minute gameplay demo. This morning they followed that video up with screenshots, just in case you're looking for a new wallpaper.
Battlefield 4 will be the first game to utilize the Frostbite 3 engine. Frostbite 3 is the latest version of the technology that powered BF3 and previous games in the series. The exact features haven't been announced for the engine yet. However, as the first video demonstrated, destructible environments remain a key feature.
The screenshots show scenes from the campaign demo. In the demo, Recker (the player character) and his squad are fighting their way through Baku, Azerbaijan. The battle takes them through muddy fields, ruined buildings and a factory. True to the Battlefield series, there's a mixture of infantry and vehicle combat.
The campaign of Battlefield games has generally been second fiddle to the multiplayer. However, it does seem like DICE is trying their hardest to bring the best features of the multiplayer into the single-player experience. The demo suggests that they're returning to the more open, "playground" structure of Battlefield: Bad Company. The environments of the campaign will be vast and players will be able to accomplish missions with a vast array of vehicles and weapons.
BF4 will launch this fall. The game's only been announced for PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 thus far. However, it's believed that DICE is developing the game for PS4 and the next Xbox as well. By pre-ordering the game, you'll get a free Premium expansion pack.
