Blitz Games Introduces True Stereoscopic 3D For Xbox 360 And PS3
Appearing at the 3D Entertainment Summit in Los Angeles, Blitz Games' CTO, Andrew Oliver, spoke about the new in-house technology offered by Blitz Games Studio, which allows the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 to display stereoscopic 3D HD, as if you were at the movies. Very impressive. Now if only they could find a way to make stereoscopic-based movies not suck.
The technology by Blitz allows for the current-gen consoles to replicate the same HD 3D that many 3D movie theatres offer. This makes me question if 3D movie theatres will now go out of business, since people will be able to get the same experience from their sofa? Anyway, Mr. Oliver shared a few comments in regards to the studio's achievement, stating, "This is an incredibly exciting and huge step forward for videogames. Our BlitzTech technology will prove beyond all doubt that we are already doing what some industry experts have said is impossible on today's game consoles. Our highly tuned engine is capable of producing real-time interactive graphics that are close to offline rendered CG movie quality."
I remember a few years back when one of the reps from LucasArts was talking about how this current feat just wouldn't be possible, even for the PS3, and that those kind of effects would even be hard to produce on consoles for the next generation. I guess he was wrong. Oliver had a few more comments to share of noteworthy importance, stating, "Many TV manufacturers are already selling sets capable of displaying 3D imagery" Andrew went on to say, "Our technology allows for our games to run in both 2D and 3D in one version - by simply flicking a 'switch' between them. It really has to be seen to be believed."
I'm sure the technology does require one's optical presence to be appreciated. Nevertheless, you can visit the Official 3D Summit Website for more information about the event, or drop by the Blitz Games Studio Official Homepage to further inform yourself about the stereoscopic technology for home consoles. And remember to stay tuned in with Blend Games for more game industry news and updates.
