Well, that didn't take long at all, did it? A day after word broke that Gearbox was making Borderlands 2, the studio decided to formally announce the game.
Borderlands 2 will be released for the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC. It will hit stores during Take-Two Interactive's 2013 fiscal year, which begins on April 1st, 2012 and runs until March 31st 2013. The game could still be a ways away, then. The report yesterday said the game would arrive by 2012, though.
Borderlands 2 is said to have the usual trappings of a sequel, such as "all-new characters, skills, environments, enemies, weapons and equipment." The game will once again return to the harsh alien world of Pandora. However, players will get to see unexplored areas of the planet.
A trademark registration from 2009 suggested that the game would be called Borderworlds. As I said yesterday, though, the phrase Borderlands is a more recognizable name. It makes sense that Gearbox would rather just tack numbers onto the end of it rather than alter that name.
Gamers will get their first look at Borderlands 2 at Gamescom 2011, which runs from August 17th to the 21st in Cologne, Germany. It will appear at PAX Prime, which will be held in Seattle from August 26th to the 28th. If you'd rather not travel to see the game, note that the latest issue of Game Informer will have an twelve-page, exclusive preview of the game as well. Their coverage will reveal, among other things, one of the game's new character classes.
