Double Fine Productions revealed the first details on their Kickstarter-funded adventure game this weekend. Broken Age will be released later this year on PC, Mac, Linux, Android and iOS.
Broken Age is a point-and-click adventure game starring a girl in a fantasy world and a boy in a futuristic sci-fi world. The girl has been chosen to be sacrificed to a monster, while the boy is kept alone on a spaceship by a motherly artificial intelligence. Players will take on the role of each character as they attempt to escape their fates.
Instead of approaching publishers with this project, Double Fine turned to Kickstarter for funding. Fans of adventure games and Double Fine's previous work responded with an avalanche of money. Double Fine received $800,000 in a day. By the time the Kickstarter drive ended, the studio had raised over $3.45 million.
"Broken Age development began when we asked our community if they would help us create a classic-style adventure game without needing to rely on traditional publishers. It turns out they did," said Double Fine on the new Broken Age website.
Double Fine's incredible success in crowd-funding inspired other studios to turn to Kickstarter as well. Other studios that have since enjoyed tremendous success on the site include Harebrained Schemes (Shadowrun Returns) and inXile Entertainment (Wasteland 2 and Torment: Tides of Numenera).
You can pre-order Broken Age at the game's website. If you pay $15, you'll get beta access with your pre-order. You can also opt to pay double that amount to get "backer access." Backers can contribute to private forums and watch the behind-the-scenes documentary series on the game's development. They'll also receive a digital copy of the game's soundtrack and "a wealth of development materials."
