Capcom Promises Devil May Cry Won't Have Disc-Locked Content
The whole on-disc DLC thing from Street Fighter X Tekken really marred Capcom's reputation for 2012; they'll forever be known as the publisher who tried to get gamers to pay for stuff they already paid for. Well, given that the on-disc DLC or disc-locked content caused such a furor, it was still something hot on the minds of gamers and Capcom was asked directly at a recent event if Devil May Cry would contain disc-locked content and a producer at Capcom promised that it wouldn't.
The Gamers Hub has a brief snippet of the quote from the recent Eurogamer Expo, in which Capcom producer Alex Jones stated that...
Okay, so there you have it folks...the additional content for Devil May Cry – if it does arrive – will probably be stored on an online server and not locked away on the disc. Nice. I'm glad we got that cleared up.
Earlier this year, preceding the release of Dragon's Dogma, Capcom acknowledged the criticism by gaming media and fans alike about locking finished content on a game disc and attempting to sell it piecemeal for a premium price. Capcom's response was that they would no longer lock add-on, premium content on the disc, which led a lot of people to assume they would do what EA did for the From Ashes DLC for Mass Effect 3 and simply store the content on a server.
However, there's always the possibility that Ninja Theory will stick to their guns and refuse to shrimp on the content at the behest of Capcom. In fact, there's a strong possibility that Devil May Cry starring emo-Dante could be a good game and that the DLC won't be locked away on a server the day the game releases.
Ha, who am I kidding? ...This is Capcom!
Devil May Cry is set for release on PS3, Xbox 360 and PC on January 15th, 2013.
