Namco Bandai had a surprise announcement in store for VGA 2012 viewers: Dark Souls 2. The sequel to the 2011 action role-playing game is in development for the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC.
Dark Souls 2 won't continue the story of the first game. Instead, the plot, hero, and world are all-new. Some things won't change: the difficulty level will still be brutal and the bosses will be massive.
In Dark Souls, players could invade other players' games in order to help or attack them. They could also leave helpful notes for each other throughout the world. While it's likely DS2 will keep those features intact, Namco Bandai mentions in a new press release that they're going to introduce a "revamped server-based multiplayer."
No release window was mentioned. However, if they're planning to release the game for current-gen consoles, a 2013 launch appears likely. It's widely believed that the next PlayStation and Xbox will launch in late 2013.
The trailer, below, won't tell you much about the game. It shows CGI battles between a knight, masked assassins, and dragons. Not very informative but still plenty of entertainment value.
