Blizzard wants players to have a hand in designing one of the Legendary items appearing in Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls. They're going to hold a community-wide project in which players will help mold the powerful relic.
"Over the next few months, we'll take you through the all the different design stages behind bringing a single Legendary item to life, from concept to creation to iteration, all the way through animation and implementation," explains Blizzard. "We'll chat with each developer involved and share progress updates along the way, giving you a unique behind-the-scenes look at what goes into making a Legendary item that looks epic, feels epic, and fits within the larger network of hero skills, monster tuning, and overall game balance."
As Reaper of Souls' release approaches, the development team will open the item crafting process up to players. They'll be able to give feedback through community votes, contests and other events. These opinions will help Blizzard finalize the details on this Legendary.
"We hope this activity will help give players a better understanding of everything that goes into item design, as well as wind up being something that's both fun and uniquely interactive. Also, once everything is said and done, there will be a Legendary item in the game that you had a hand in making. How cool is that?!"
It's probable that this Legendary won't be useful for all classes. However, Blizzard says that they're opening to possibly doing another event like this in the future. It really depends on how this initial project goes.
Reaper of Souls is the first expansion pack for D3. In this expansion, players will battle Malthael in the kingdom of Westmarch. This new Act of the game's campaign will take players closer to the level cap of 70. Other features planned for the expansion include a new Crusader class, a revamped Paragon progression system and randomized dungeons known as Loot Runs.
Blizzard has announced Reaper of Souls for the PC, Mac and PS4. The expansion will be playable at BlizzCon next month.
