John Romero, designer of Doom, Quake and Wolfenstein 3D, hasn't made a first-person shooter in awhile. He hasn't abandoned the genre he popularized with id Software, though. He hinted at a future project this weekend.
"Definitely not! I have plans...," Romero tweeted when asked if he had giving up on making "old school FPS."
Romero clarified later that he's not making Daikatana 2. Daikatana was a long-delayed shooter that Romero made at Ion Storm, the company he founded after leaving id Software. The game failed to live up to its considerable hype and is part of the reason that Ion Storm ultimately folded.
Since leaving Ion Storm in 2001, Romero has bounced around a bit. He founded a mobile gaming studio called Monkeystone Games and an MMO developer called Slipgate Ironworks. He also worked on Gauntlet: Seven Sorrows at Midway Games. He's currently the CEO and Chief Creative Officer of Loot Drop, a social gaming company.
A vague mention of "plans" might not seem newsworthy. Still, the fact that it's John Romero means that long-time FPS fans are going to at least be slightly curious. Daikatana was pretty crappy but the guy was still responsible for some of those most famous shooters ever made. That distinction will probably follow him for the rest of his career.
