The next installment in the Dragon Age series might take the medieval fantasy franchise in an entirely new direction. BioWare says they've been looking at Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim for inspiration.
“[The next Dragon Age] is gonna have the best of features from the prior Dragon Age games, but it’s also gonna have a lot of things I think players are gonna find compelling from some of the games that are out now that are doing really well with more of an open world feel," BioWare CEO and co-founder Dr. Ray Muzyka told Wired.
"We’re checking [Skyrim] out aggressively. We like it. We’re big admirers of [Bethesda] and the product," he said. "We think we can do some wonderful things."
Introducing an open-world structure into the Dragon Age series would be interesting. BioWare's games are tightly scripted and that sounds incompatible with a "sandbox" style game. The size and complexity of Skyrim's game world is something to behold but the price of all that side content is that the main plot is looser than, say, Mass Effect 2.
Dragon Age hasn't had the same success as ME in terms of sales or reviews so BioWare will no doubt try to shake things up somehow. The most recent rumor was that the next game would feature arena-based multiplayer. This multiplayer is said to use Battlefield 3's Frostbite 2 Engine and allow players to take on the role of humans or dragons.
BioWare, for their part, hasn't even announced Dragon Age 3 yet so it may be awhile before we find out what direction they take the series.
