The classic NES game DuckTales is making a well-deserved comeback DuckTales Remastered will hit the Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii U at some point this summer.
In DuckTales, players control tycoon Scrooge McDuck on his search for treasures. He'll travel to far-flung locations like the Himalayas and the Moon in search of these forgotten relics. He'll also tangle with his rival Flintheart Glomgold, the second richest duck in the world.
An aging millionaire duck seems like an unusual hero. However, he's rather sprightly for his age. He can use his cane as a pogo stick to make mega jumps. His cane also doubles as a weapon.
Developer WayForward kept the original levels from the NES version but expanded them to "significantly enhance the gameplay experience." They've also introduced a tutorial level so players can get a handle on the mechanics. The 8-bit graphics have been replaced by hand-drawn, animated sprites and new background art. The remake also introduces voice acting, including some actors from the DuckTales TV series. The soundtrack has been given a "modern twist" but the classic melodies (Moon song!) are still intact.
DuckTales was the first game that my 6-year-old, butter-fingered self could finish. As such, it occupies a special place in my heart. I'm curious to see how much WayForward alters the difficulty in order to challenge the gamers who beat it decades ago. Will nostalgia and leaderboard competition will be enough to satisfy us geezers?
