CCP's persistent online shooter won't be coming to "consoles," after all. It's coming to just one console: the PS3.
"When we set out to build a true persistent shooter for consoles, it was evident that Sony's dedication to providing a flexible and MMO-friendly platform -alongside a robust virtual goods business model- made the PlayStation 3 the natural home for DUST 514," said Hilmar Veigar Pétursson, CEO of CCP. "CCP's ambition is to bring a level of truly meaningful, persistent gameplay to the PlayStation 3 never before seen."
DUST 514 complements CCP's PC MMO EVE Online. Starship pilots in EVE and mercenaries in Dust 514 can join forces to capture territories on planets. The ground troops and starships above can both influence the course of the battle.
The upside to PS3 exclusivity is that CCP can focus on tailoring DUST 514 to the PS3's particular features. The game will support PlayStation Move and the PlayStation Move Sharp Shooter Accessory. PlayStation Home and the upcoming PS Vita handheld will soon be integrated into the DUST experience as well.
DUST will not require a subscription. Instead, it will be supported by microtransactions. Players can use real money to purchase weapons, vehicles, and other battle gear. If you'd rather not shell out money for these goods, note that you can also buy these items with virtual currency earned in-game.
