EA's Still Untitled Marvel Fighting Game
EA's currently developing a fighting game for the next-gen consoles based on the Marvel Comics' Universe. Could the new game, which promises big time interactive city building and environment smashing like never before, surpass disappointments like Marvel: Nemesis? Could this be the greatest Marvel fighting game ever since Capcom's Marvel Super Heroes in the 90's?
Recently on Spike TV's Game Head, EA revealed the earliest footage for the new Marvel Comics fighting video game they are currently developing. The footage featured clips of cut-scenes and some in game action.
So what do we know right now? Who are the featured players? According to the producers, this new game will basically be a 3D fighting arena game. The arena? Basically a full two blocks of an actual cityscape that you can demolish and bash to your heart's content.
This will of course be the big draw of the game. Never before has a comic book super hero game really captured the chaos of a battle in a crowded city street, with falling debris, shrapnel, and buildings that are torn through and caused to collapse during the melee.
But more than that, what about the civilians? This game will have that too. The environments will be full of ordinary people with their own AI that the players will be forced to interact with during all the destruction.
Who is in it? From the footage we can confirm that Captain America, Spider-man, The Hulk, Dr. Doom, and Juggernaut will be in the game. Spidey looks like he's sporting a look similar to that of his movies, and Cap looks to be in his Ultimates style garb. Juggernaut's look seemed to be a cross between his design in Ultimate X-men comics and the third X-men movie. There was footage in the Game Head episode that seemed to hint that gamers will have the option to choose alternate costumes for their chosen hero.
Of all the forays of the Marvel Comics-verse into fighting games, nothing in my humble opinion has measured up to the classic Capcom Street Fighter style games such as X-men: Children of The Atom which then became Marvel Super Heroes and then ultimately the Marvel vs. Capcom series along with numerous other titles under that branch.

While this is a totally different type of gameplay, the footage so far promises some fun "kaiju"-esque action we've never seen in a Marvel video game before. Even though it's not an action-RPG, it will be interesting to see if it can measure up to the popularity of Marvel Ultimate Alliance, which allowed gamers to play as numerous cult and fan favorites Marvel comic characters you never could before along with appearances of 100's of characters, and customizing your own team of super heroes. Oh and if this game doesn't have Blackheart and Shuma Gorath it is dead to me. Just kidding.
