The Star Wars action game Force Unleashed is getting a lot of hype but you'll get a chance to see if it lives up to the marketing before its September release. A demo is due to hit Playstation Network and Xbox Live in August and it'll come with some exclusive content.
Unleashed puts players in control of Darth Vader's secret apprentice "Starkiller" as he traipses around the galaxy killing off Jedi. The game is set between the third and fourth Star Wars films and promises to fill in some of the gaps between the two trilogies. All in all it's a pretty cool concept, even though the pasty middle-schooler in me who used to read the Expanded Universe books is a bit sad that Starkiller makes Mara Jade, Emperor Palpatine's secret apprentice, look really puny by comparison.
Anyway, DarkZero received word from Matt Shell, marketing manager at LucasArts that the demo will hit PSN and XBLA sometime in August. The demo will feature the TIE Fighter construction facility level from the retail version, which might be really eye-opening if your father never sat you down during your teenage years and told you where baby Imperial starfighters come from.
Interestingly, the demo will have a unique ending that won't be seen in the retail version. This probably means the demo will only show part of the level and the developers don't want to just cut you off at the end of the demo by fading to black so they'll be adding some sort of cutscene. I don't expect much from this "exclusive ending" - actually, I expect a rancor to run in and eat Starkiller like the abominable snowman from SkiFree. Still, I appreciate the sentiment.
Unleashed will hit North America in September 16th and will be available for (deep breath) PS3, Xbox 360, Wii, PS2, Nintendo DS, PSP, N-Gage and i-Phone.
