If you want to play PS Vita exclusive Killzone Mercenary before its September release, now's your chance. Guerrilla Cambridge announced today that they've opened up registration for a closed beta test.
The beta allows players to try out Mercenary's multiplayer mode. Players will be able to customize their loadout with a wide range of firearms, grenades, armor and other items. Whether you prefer brute force or stealth, you'll find a loadout to suit your interests.
You can sign up for the beta here. All you'll need to do is provide your PSN user name and your email address. Sign-ups will be open until 2PM PDT on Wednesday, July 17th. If you're chosen, you'll be notified at that email address.
"Unfortunately there are limited spaces available so not everyone will be able to get in," Guerrilla says. "Please note participation is at SCEA's discretion and their decision is final. Unless you are picked for the beta, no further correspondence will be sent."
Guerrilla says on Mercenary's website that the game offers "full-fledged online multiplayer experience unlike anything seen on a handheld platform before." There are three multiplayer modes available in the game: Mercenary Warfare, Guerrilla Warfare and Warzone. The first two are free-for-all and team deathmatch, respectively. Warzone is the signature mode of KZ multiplayer, tasking two teams with completing objective-based missions. Whoever completes five missions first will win.
These modes will be playable on six different maps, with locales ranging from a fishing village to the Vektan Halls of Justice. Each map is inspired by "key events from the Killzone universe." The game supports matches of between 2 and 8 players.
Guerrilla didn't announce the exact contents of the multiplayer beta. Presumably you'll get to try out a fraction of the modes and maps available in the full game, though.

Mercenary will also ship with a campaign set after the events of the first Killzone. Players take on the role of Arran Danner, a mercenary who accepts contracts from both the ISA and the Helghast as the two factions wage their interstellar war. However, after an evacuation mission in Pyrrhus goes wrong, Danner finds himself protecting a young boy who could potentially tip the scales in the war.
