Overkill Software, developers of the co-op shooter PAYDAY: The Heist, is currently working with Valve on a secret project. This joint effort is said to blend PAYDAY with Left 4 Dead in some way.
"As perceptive gamers will have noticed, several hints have recently been dropped into Payday: The Heist, which has led to various rumors," said Payday game director Ulf Andersson on the company's website. "We are excited to be able to confirm that an in-depth collaboration between Overkill and Valve is currently in production."
"We are working on a very cool blend of Payday and Left 4 Dead. I am sure it is so exciting that it will have some players check into the hospital before we are done.”
In Payday, players take on the role of criminals trying to pull off daring heists. The team of four masked bandits attack an armored car, ambush a prison transport and more. The four-player co-op, coupled with the dynamically spawning enemies, led to many Left 4 Dead comparisons. A crossover seems natural.
Andersson didn't provide any further details on this collaboration so it's left to our imagination. This could be something simple like Left 4 Dead-themed masks for Payday. If that was the case, though, these two studios wouldn't need to spend much (if any) time together. My money's on this collaboration leading to something more extensive.
Is it a Left 4 Dead map with elements from Payday or a Payday map with a touch of Left 4 Dead? It's also possible that both games will be receiving new content. Either way, expect to see bank robbers killing zombies sometime in the near future.
There is one other bit of uncertainty to ponder: what platform will this joint project appear on? Payday is a PS3 and PC game, while Left 4 Dead is on Xbox 360 and PC. A PC release seems likely but will console gamers miss out on the fun?
