The first trailer for Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII premiered tonight. Returns, the third and final game starring Lightning, looks like it might be able to stop Final Fantasy's cold streak.
The game takes place hundreds of years after Final Fantasy XIII-2. Lightning wakes up from her long slumber to realize that the world is just days from certain destruction. She teams up with some of her former allies in a desperate bid to stop the apocalypse.
Time is a crucial element of Lightning Returns. Lightning has to choose how to spend the final 13 days of the world. Certain actions will wind back the clock or move it forward. You won't be able to see all of the game in one playthrough.
Lightning is the only playable character in the game. This makes combat substantially different. You directly control her actions and movement in battle. That should give the game a more action RPG feel.
Square Enix is developing Lightning Returns for the Xbox 360 and PS3. They plan to release the game in 2013.
