Mass Effect 3 's launch was about as big as you'd expect. Publisher EA revealed today that they've shipped over 3.5 million copies of the role-playing game worldwide.
ME3 completes the trilogy that began in 2007. A mysterious alien race known as the Reapers has begun to systematically exterminate all life in the galaxy. Commander Shepard and his team of misfits must assemble a strike force capable of toppling this threat. Their journey will take them all across the Milky Way Galaxy.
As always, it's important to note that shipping copies of the game isn't the same as actually selling them. It does give you some idea of the demand for ME3, though. The release of the game was staggered - it hit North America on Tuesday and Europe today - so we'll have to wait a bit longer for concrete sales figures.
The strong sales have been matched by strong reviews. It currently has Metacritic ratings of 94, 92 and 91 on the Xbox 360, PC, and PS3 respectively. Over 30 publications have apparently given it perfect scores.
"We have been truly humbled by the amazing response from fans and critics for Mass Effect 3," said BioWare co-founder Dr. Ray Muzyka. "The game is a gripping, engaging experience where the decisions and choices you make will truly stay with you for the months and years ahead. We are all incredibly proud of Casey Hudson and the teams in Edmonton and Montreal for delivering the best game BioWare has ever made."
Expect our review soon. In the mean time, read our impressions of the game's day one DLC, "From Ashes."
