Nintendo confirmed another big third-party title for the Wii U during their E3 presentation: Mass Effect 3. While this Wii U port will be welcome news for RPG fans, it does present a problem.
Mass Effect 3 completes the story arc begun in the first game. Many of the characters and storylines carry over from previous installments in the series. In fact, the decisions you make in the first two games have an impact on the story of the third game. The issue, then is this: if Wii U owners haven't played ME1 or ME2 what does BioWare do to bring them up to speed?
BioWare faced a similar problem with Mass Effect 2 on the PS3, because that console never received the first game. They ended up creating an interactive comic called Mass Effect: Genesis that related the story of ME1 and presented players with six key plot choices that were in the game itself. These decisions were then saved and imported into Mass Effect 2.
It seems plausible that BioWare would do the same thing for ME3 on the Wii U. They would just need to create an interactive comic for Mass Effect 2's story. I can't help but feel like Wii U owners are missing out on a lot of story with this solution, though. That being said, there's probably no better solution short of porting the other two games over to the Wii U.
BioWare plans to release ME3 on the Wii U at launch. The Wii U's launch is expected this fall.
