Mortal Kombat X Mobile Game Announced
NetherRealm Studios sent out word today that a new mobile companion game will be released for Mortal Kombat X alongside the home console version. The mobile title will be a hybrid mix of a card battling game and a one-on-one fighter. There is a brief glimpse at the game in action with the teaser trailer below.
The new mobile title will be available for the iPad, the iPhone, the iPod Touch and Android devices as well.
According to the press release, the game will be a free-to-play title that challenges players with their reactive reflexes and their strategic prowess. The game will mix traditional one-on-one combat with a card battling system. Unfortunately we don't really get to see how the card system works in the teaser trailer above.
I'm curious if the cards will play a part in the actual combat or if they'll be used for things like the Brutalities and Fatalities? I guess we'll have to wait for April to get here before we'll know for sure.
Nevertheless, Ed Boon, the creative director on Mortal Kombat X and one of the head honchos at NetherRealm Studios commented about the new mobile app, saying...
Cross-connectivity really does seem to be the order of the day when it comes to mobile companion apps for big AAA games. We've recently seen this with things like Battlefield 4, Assassin's Creed, Watch Dogs and even games like Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare.
A lot of big titles are gunning for cross-connectivity with mobile apps to increase market reach. It's hard to say right now how well this venture from the larger publishers is working out with cross-app compatibility. I mean it could really go one way or another.

One thing I'm curious about is how did they manage to get Apple to approve of Mortal Kombat X for their mobile devices? I mean, I was pretty sure they were against excessive violence and whatnot. NetherRealm will still be allowed to have full Fatalities and Brutalities in the app version... uncensored? That would be a real feat, especially coming off the claims that some indie devs have had to remove images of guns from their promo images on the app store. It would be kind of funny if a game that allows players to cut people into pieces, complete with guts and spillage would be okay but images of cartoon characters with guns isn't.
Anyway, the mobile app for Mortal Kombat X will be made available around the same time as the main game in April, 2015. The console and PC version of the game will launch on April 14th, 2015 for the Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, PS4 and PC. You can learn more by paying a visit to the game's official website.
