Good news: Mortal Kombat X now has an official release date. Bad news: you have to pre-order to get one of the characters on the game's roster.
Mortal Kombat X will be launching on PS4, Xbox One, PS3, Xbox 360 and PC on Tuesday, April 14th. Typically Tuesday is just for North American releases but the game will be hitting all territories on that date.
If you decide to pre-order Mortal Kombat X you'll unlock Goro at launch. Goro, a four-armed Shokan warrior, was the sub boss of the first MK game and has appeared in numerous sequels. He's one of several long-time characters appearing in MKX.
I've never been a Goro guy - his three-finger Ninja Turtle hands always creeped me out - but I'm still sad that he's a pre-order exclusive. I understand why Warner Bros. would do it; this is a desirable bonus that will persuade more than a few gamers to pre-order the game. However, a playable character feels a little too important to be used as a sales pitch. I would've preferred that they offered something more innocuous like character skins.
Presumably gamers who didn't pre-order will get a chance to play as Goro eventually. It's unclear how the character will be rolled out to the rest of the Mortal Kombat X community. It's possible that players will need to fork over some cash to unlock him.
Other returning characters in MKX include Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Raiden and Kano. Newcomer Cassie Cage is the daughter of long-time characters Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade. Other new combatants include the insect-like woman D'Vorah, magical warrior Kotal Kahn, and tandem fighters Ferra and Torr.
Players can choose between three variations of each character. Each variation has a different fighting style, letting you alter your strategy while still playing your favorite character. Let's say you want to be Kano. You can be a grappler by picking the Commando variation, a long-range fighter with Cybernetic, or a knife-fighter with Cutthroat.

Goro's variations weren't announced today. MK creator Ed Boon joked on Twitter that one variation has six arms. Proper details on Goro's fighting styles in MKX will probably be revealed in a future gameplay trailer.
