Today Nintendo confirmed the long-running rumors that they will release successor to the Wii in 2012. They made brief mention of the new console in their quarterly financial report.
Nintendo president Satoru Iwata said in the report (via Bloomberg) that the upcoming game system will "propose a new approach to home video game consoles." He didn't explain what that new approach will be. However, unlike the recently released 3DS, it probably won't include 3D support.
“It’s difficult to make 3-D images a key feature, because 3-D televisions haven’t obtained wide acceptance yet," said Iwata.
There was no mention of what this new console will be called. Journalists and gamers alike have referred to it as either Wii 2 or Wii HD. I suppose it's possible they could go with something that boring but who knows. "Wii" seemed like a crappy name at first but the console sold eleventy billion units anyway. It's possible that they'll go with something atypical again.
Now that Nintendo's confirmed this new console's existence, all that's left is to formally reveal it. The latest rumor was that they'd announce it at E3 or earlier.
