Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty Gets A GDC Gameplay Trailer
PlayStation’s oddest hero of all, Abe, is heading back into action soon on the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita as Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty creeps closer and closer to launch. To prepare, how about taking a gander at a new gameplay trailer for the HD-ified PSone classic?
To be fair, New 'n' Tasty is quite a bit more than just an HD reskin, as the entire game was basically rebuilt from the ground up to make it looks as wonderful as, well, what you see in the video above. The original Oddworld games looked wonderful on the PSone, but no amount of spit-shine was going to clean the game up as nicely as what we’re seeing in today’s new trailer.
Growing up, Oddworld was one of my favorite games. It looked great and featured platforming gameplay unlike anything that had come before it. Each series of screens is basically a puzzle to be pieced together, rewarding timing and careful planning and brutally punishing those who simply try to sprint through from start to finish.
With the HD remakes of Stranger’s Wrath and Munch’s Odyssey doing so well in recent years, the folks at Just Add Water decided it was time to tackle the granddaddy of the Oddworld series, Abe’s Oddysee. Thus, the New ‘n’ Tasty version of that very game was born and, according to a recent statement by Just Add Water CEO Stewart Gilray, it will take the old school classic to whole new heights of awesomeness.
"We’ve been working incredibly hard to bring you this epic re-imagining of Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee. In this trailer, you’ll see elements of gameplay and locations we’ve been talking about for the past nine month, in all their 21st century glory," Gilray said. “You’l see the dynamic cameras, the epic full-screen visual effects, Scrabs and Paramites, all trying to ruin Abe’s day."
In the game, what begins as a simple mission to escape a terrifying factory quickly evolves into an unlikely hero’s quest to save his entire race and overthrow a powerful megacorporation. You’ll explore exotic lands, get to know (or run from) bizarre wildlife and help rescue (or gleefully destroy) your kinsmen. You’ll even have the ability to take control of enemy soldiers and perhaps unleash godly powers before all is said and done.
No word yet on a release date but, if this latest New 'n' Tasty trailer speaks for what we can expect out of the full game, I’d say things are looking my-tee-fine up until this point. That’s good news, seeing as how the developers recently announced that they need to sell 500,000 copies of the digital game if they hope to re-make the sequel, Abe's Exodus and even create a new game in the series.
