Outlast Whistleblower DLC Creeps Onto PlayStation 4 Today
The unspeakable events that unfolded in first-person horror game Outlast continue today as a prequel DLC chapter called “Whistleblower” makes its way to the PlayStation 4. Players will have the opportunity to find out where the nightmare all began while running for their lives in this all new adventure.
One of my favorite gaming experiences so far this year has easily been Outlast. While I certainly enjoyed playing the game-- hiding from deranged killers, scrounging for batteries, peeing my pants—I’ve found that an even greater joy can be achieved simply by watching other people play the game. While I’ve only played Outlast one time through, I’ve probably watched the storyline unfold another half dozen times through Twitch on the PS4, laughing manically as a newbie to the game shrieks in terror or nearly throws their controller when an unexpected surprise comes barreling around the corner. I’m all for being scared, but the real fun comes in watching other people be scared. Then again, maybe I’m just a jerk who derives far too much enjoyment from other folks’ misery.
Whether watching or playing, though, I’m excited to finally get my hands on the Outlast Whistleblower DLC launching today on PSN, bringing a whole new chapter of fear to the insane asylum I’ve grown to know (and fear) so well.
In the original game, the player took on the role of a journalist who received a bit of correspondence from an employee of a shady-as-all-hell asylum. The employee wanted the world to know what kind of horrible deeds were being carried out within the walls of the penitentiary and, being a good journalist, the player decides to investigate these claims in person. That, of course, turns out to be a rather bad idea, leading to an evening of terror in a place where the inmates are running (and murdering nearly everything that moves in) the asylum.
But what about that employee who got the ball rolling on this whole mess? Whatever happened to that guy? Did he make it out okay or did he become yet another victim of that fateful night? Was his fate somehow connected to that of the journalist? According to Red Barrels co-founder Philippe Morin in today’s Whistleblower launch announcement, all of those questions and more are about to be answered.
“When we started working on Whistleblower, we knew we wanted to expand on the story, providing some memorable new encounters, new sources of terror and some answers to the mysteries brought to light in Outlast,” he said. “As Waylon Park, the whistleblower who emailed Miles Upshur, you’ll witness psycho killers and asylum security face off as all hell truly breaks loose.”
Count me in! Look for the Whistleblower DLC to arrive today on PlayStation 4 for $8.99.
