The Phantom Pain Trailer Wows VGAs, Fuels Metal Gear Solid 5 Speculation
If there's one thing I love, it's when a game developer goes the extra mile to mess with their audience. Take The Phantom Pain, for instance. Revealed during last night's Video Game Awards on Spike, the game is a complete unknown. We know next to nothing about the story. The concept seems like it's coming from deep left field. One of the characters looks like Snake from the Metal Gear Solid series. And, most importantly, the developer Moby Dick Studio doesn't even exist.
Some might call this marketing gimmickry, but I call it a damn good time. Until more is finally revealed about the game, the internet will be abuzz with rumors and speculation. A lot of people are already calling it a teaser for Metal Gear Solid. Given the fact that that series' director, Hideo Kojima, was in the audience last night, his love of obscurity and trying new things, the Snake look-a-like and that one fiery dude who looks like he could be a villain in any MGS game, that's exactly where I'm setting up camp for the time being.
But don't take my word for how bananas the trailer is. It's been pulled from just about every source on the internet, but I was able to stumble upon one copy that's even got a pretty clear picture. Check it out for yourself.
That was a giant fire whale! Holy crap, amiright?
Whether this is a new title from a new developer, a cleverly disguised look at Metal Gear Solid 5 or something entirely different, there's no telling at this point. One thing is for sure: It certainly got our attention.
