PopCap Aims To Support Charity: Water With Solitaire Blitz World Record Attempt
PopCap Games has announced a special transatlantic Solitaire Blitz Guinness World Record attempt, challenging two women from different continents to play 30 straight hours of their favorite digital card game to raise funds for charity:water.
Usually I would scoff at these bizarre, mad- up video game world record attempts (How many people can we get playing Angry Birds in a single location...standing on their heads?). However, when they're doing it for charity, especially one that focuses on providing safe drinking water to people in developing nations, it's hard not to root for the people making this wacky attempt.
Laura Rich and Kathleen Henkel will be attempting to play way more than a doctor's prescribed amount of Solitaire Blitz in London and New York respectively. The official name of this new record is the “longest video games marathon playing a card game,” and both women are shooting for 30 straight hours of play from June 26-27.
PopCap will be making a donation to charity:water for each hour played by both women, going up to a minimum of £6,500, or $10,000. Along with its donation, the game developer is encouraging interested parties to make their own pledges through the Solitaire Blitz app on Facebook. All you have to do is search for “Solitaire Blitz,” add the app to your Facebook account, and click on the “Pledge” button to make a donation. You can donate as little as $0.093 per hour; about $2.78 for the full marathon.
PopCap ensures that 100 percent of all proceeds will go to charity:water so, again, it's hard to make a frowny face when we're talking about supporting such a good cause...even if the method is a bit odd.
