Minecraft developer Mojang will start the alpha test for follow-up game Scrolls. A small batch of access codes will be sent out to players who signed up before today.
Scrolls is like a cross between an RPG and collectible card game. The player travels through the world and battles A.I. enemies using a deck of magical scrolls. Through these battles, you'll earn new scrolls. A multiplayer arena will enable you to test your skills against other players.
The explorable world is not included in the initial alpha build. Instead, players are provided with a full set of scrolls right from the outset. They'll be able to challenge other players in the arena from day one. To warm up before your online battles, though, you can fight an A.I. opponent on three difficulty levels.
Mojang intends to add additional features as the test proceeds. An auction house and character customization are two examples they've mentioned so far.
The alpha keys will be sent out via e-mail. If you didn't sign up already, you've missed your chance at the alpha. Mojang says they've got plenty of potential testers on file already. They didn't mention how many people signed up for testing in total but considering Minecraft's popularity, I'm sure they had a good turnout.
Mojang will hold an open beta once the alpha build is stabilized. No word on when the beta will kick off. Minecraft's alpha lasted a year, though, so it might be a long wait.
