Star Citizen Could Feature Modular Ships

Star Citizen continues to be an exemplary piece of an independent design journey, with the team now having hit $63 million on the crowd-funding notch. The game continues to grow and expand in its design scope about as quickly as the playpen for its budget is ballooning.
Blues picked up the news from a recent 'Letter from the Chairman' over on the official Roberts Space Industries website, where Chris Roberts lays out the current financial accomplishments of the team as well as a brief roadmap for what they have planned for the $64 and $65 million dollar goals.
According to Roberts, since the $63 mark has already been surpassed – and this means a new starliner class ship is inbound called the Genesis Starliner – the team is already looking ahead to the next milestone.... pets.
That's right, they want pets at the $64 million mark. As noted in the post by Roberts...
“We have repair bots, we have fish… but we haven’t implemented a traditional pet system in Star Citizen yet. At $64 million, that changes. From Jones the Cat in Alien to the Battlestar Galactica’s Daggit, pets have a place onboard starships… and we want to give you that option in Star Citizen. Expect traditional terrestrial options, plus anything exotic we can dream up in the Star Citizen universe!”
I don't know if the pets are really my cup of tea or get me all that excited, but the $65 million goal is where all the excitement resides. You can check out Roberts' brief excerpt for this milestone below...
“...we have a major feature we’re investigating as an option. Suffice it to say, we’ve heard a lot of your feedback about modular ships and we want to expand our plan for how to do them… so check back next letter for more information!”
Modular ships? Now you have my attention.
I'm just trying to figure out how this would work and whether or not it would be for certain ships or for all ships or a certain class of ships?

I mean, there's no way they're going to abandon the really cool designs they've already come up with for things like the Drake Cutlass or the Origin M50. I haven't partaken in any of the forum discussions regarding modular ship designs or customization, so I'm sure those diehard fans can drop comments in the section below to explain what they would prefer to see in the space-simulation title.
I'm excited about what the game is already attempting to achieve, especially with stuff like the race modes and the FPS module. I can't wait to see how it all comes together to create one massive, cohesive universe.
I think the race mode and the capital ships are two of the things I'm most interested in seeing more of, and the game seems to be edging closer to revealing more content about these features. It's an exciting time to see how this is all unfolding.
