Platformer Super Meat Boy is going mobile. Team Meat announced today that they're creating a special version of the game for iOS and other touchscreen devices. This new version is dubbed Super Meat Boy: The Game.
"So as some of you know, we have been playing with the idea of porting SMB on the iphone for some time," said designer Edmund McMillen on the Team Meat Blog. "Sadly, there was no way of doing this without the game becoming a pile of garbage, Super Meat Boy is a twitch platformer with precision controls, there was no way in hell this would work on a touch screen with buttons all over it, Super Meat Boy isn't a game we want to make a sub-par version of just to cash in... "
"So, we decided to totally remake the whole game instead, from the ground up!"
I'm curious to see how they'll adapt SMB for the new platform. As McMillen said, the original is a twitch platformer. In order to succeed, you need quick reflex and even quicker fingers. Touchscreen controls aren't really known for precision, though. Team Meat has their work cut out for them.
McMillen says that they've just started development on the touchscreen SMB. As such, a lot of the minor details are still subject to change. However, they've nailed down the general principles of what the game will be like. He says the game won't be a "shitty port" with virtual buttons strewn about the screen.
Super Meat Boy: The Game will also have new sound and art. You can see the latter for yourself in the first screenshot, below.
