First-person shooter The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct's first DLC was announced today. The Walker Herd Survival Pack will be available exclusively to pre-order customers.
The DLC unlocks Herd Mode, in which players must fight off an endless stream of walkers. A trailer below shows some footage from this mode. Also included in the Herd Survival Pack are new weapons for the story mode. Players will get an assortment of fancy cutlery, including a survival knife, sawtoothed machete, reinforced hatchet, "advanced machete," and kukri.
Gamers in the US can get access to the Herd Survival Pack by pre-ordering through GameStop. GAME in the UK and GameStop Ireland are offering it as well. Details for other territories haven't been announced yet. The offer is only offered to Xbox 360 and PS3 gamers, even though the game's also in development for PC and Wii U.
When they say that this DLC is exclusive to pre-order customers, they probably mean that it's exclusive at launch. Everyone else will presumably be able to download it in time, albeit for a price. After all, it's in the developers' best interests to have multiplayer content available to as many people as possible.
Survival Instinct is set before the events of the Walking Dead television series. Daryl Dixon and his brother Merle must make their way across the walker-infested South in order to find safe refuge. They'll have to scavenge supplies, fight walkers, and contend with other survivors on their journey. For a closer look at the gameplay, check out the leaked footage.
Walking Dead: Survival Instinct will launch in March.
Update: A spokesperson for the game has confirmed to Gaming Blend that the DLC will be on sale to the general public starting on April 16th.
