Xbox One gamers may have a new free-to-play game soon. The European ratings board PEGI is now listing the co-op action game Warframe for XB1.
In Warframe, players team up with up to three friends in a wide range of missions. They're tasked with assassinating targets, sabotaging ships, hacking terminals and more. Each player wears an exo-suit known as a Warframe that grants them special abilities. Players can buy upgrades for their armor and weapons with the experience points they earn during missions. They also have the option of spending real-world money.
The open beta for Warframe launched on PC in March 2013. The free-to-play title was then released on the PS4 when the console hits stores in November. After Microsoft announced that they were going to allow indies to self-publish on Xbox One, Warframe developer Digital Extremes expressed interest in bringing the game to that platform.
"We're happy to see Microsoft shift its attitude on independent development for their new system," Digital Extremes' Meredith Braun said in July. "We'd be silly not to consider Warframe for Xbox One now. The system itself will be awesome and now the landscape of games that it supports has just become limitless. Exciting times."
The PEGI listing suggests that Digital Extremes has decided to go ahead with the XB1 release. While the studio hasn't made an official announcement yet, ratings boards are generally reliable when it comes to leaking ports of existing games. For example, it's how we found out about the PSN re-release of Darkstalkers and Wii U version of Earthbound.
While a game usually arrives within months of a ratings board listing, that's not a sure thing. Earthbound, for example, wasn't released until about five years after its initial ESRB listing. T
The PEGI listing for Warframe says it will arrive on Xbox One on December 31st, 2013. Obviously that didn't happen. That date does suggest that Xbox One gamers won't have to wait very long, though.
