X-Men: Battle Of The Atom Brings Multiplayer Card Combat To iOS
Mobile devices are about to get bitten by a radioactive spider, or perhaps exposed to some good old fashioned gamma radiation, as Marvel Entertainment announces a partnership with Aeria Mobile to launch X-Men: Battle of the Atom, a free-to-play card battle game for iPhone.
Okay, so maybe none of the X-Men received their powers from the examples I used, but “suddenly sprout claws from their hands as a sickly child” or “slowly turn into a blue cat creature” just didn’t have the same ring. The point is, Marvel’s most notorious team of do-gooders are getting their own mobile game, one that allows players to compete in 20 vs. 20 battles in realtime. The iOS game features artwork from various Marvel staff, as well as stories created by longtime X-Men writer, James Asmus.
“Relive 50 years of X-Men as they call on past and future allies to combat some of the most dangerous villains ever known,” reads a statement from Marvel. “Building a roster from a staggering amount of characters including Wolverine, Storm, Iceman, Beast, Kitty Bryde and many more, players will tackle more than 45 missions and experience upcoming events based on landmark stories like Schism, Messiah Complex, Age of apocalypse and, of course, Battle of the atom.”
In the 20-player X-Teams mode, players will be able to take part in massive battles with other players, and various story arcs will actually take place over the course of several months. You’ll go toe to toe with the likes of Magneto, the Hellfire Club, the Dark Phoenix and Apocalypse in these adventures, utilizing your favorite heroes and their mutant powers to stop evil in its tracks. As with most games of this sort, you can also expect plenty of leaderboards for skill comparison, as well as regular content updates to help keep things fresh with new characters, stories and more.
“With the release of X-Men: Battle of the Atom, Aeria Games has done a tremendous job of celebrating 50 years of X-Men,” said Andreea Enache-Thune, Senior VP of Games and Digital Distribution at Marvel Entertainment. “We’re especially excited that the game will include hundreds of characters who have populated the X-Men universe over the years, spanning limitless timelines and alternate realities. Fans will be hard-pressed to think of any characters not in the game.”
Enache-Thune went on to add that any characters not in the game will very likely be added in a future content update.
“It’s an honor for us to develop a game for such a storied and beloved franchise, one that is a personal favorite of mine,” said Aeria CEO and founder, Lan Hoang. “X-Men: Battle of the Atom captures the amazing artwork and drama of the greatest comic book storylines, bringing them to life with exciting dynamic battles between dozens of players in real time.”
