Now that The Avengers: Age Of Ultron trailer has dropped on an unsuspecting public, there are two columns that everything you've seen falls into: "Wow, that was amazing," and "WTF?"
Earlier, we covered some of the amazing images that made us ask some hard-hitting questions about what's going to happen in the next Avengers flick. But after the twentieth viewing in a row, we've found some things referenced in the trailer that just hit the WTF button pretty hard. Here are 20 moments from The Avengers: Age Of Ultron trailer that had us wondering big time.
Double Trouble
Interestingly enough, we start the Age Of Ultron trailer with an angry mob. Why they're angry, we don't yet know. What we do know, though, is that Scarlett Witch and Quicksilver are in this sequence as the plain old Maximoff twins, which suggests that we'll see them before Baron Von Strucker started experimenting on them.
The Invincible Ultron
This teasing shot of Ultron's hand, peeking through some liquefied metal, suggests one of two things. The first is that this is from the moment Ultron is born, and the steel is from his initial forging. The second, and more terrifying, is that not even hot, liquefied metal can stop him.
Cutting The Strings
As we've stated earlier, there's a huge mention of puppetry. In particular, Ultron makes reference to The Avengers being puppets on strings. Knowing that he's "got no strings," it's safe to assume those strings are human emotions and logic. If that's the case, it's going to be a frightening sight to see Ultron operating outside of those strings.
Defying The Creator
The Age Of Ultron drones are like brothers to Ultron, which makes the scene where he crushes one's head even more freaky. He doesn't realize how he can use them just yet, but at the moment, he sees them as a symbol of his flawed origins. Not to mention, the amount of power needed to crush one of those Iron Man face masks is not something you want to be on the wrong end of.
Castle Von Strucker
At the end of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, we got a brief look at the aged underground lab that Baron Von Strucker and HYDRA had been running their experiments on the Maximoff twins. Judging by this image, and a couple of others that follow afterwards, we wonder if Baron Von Strucker's evacuating the lab as The Avengers: Age Of Ultron is beginning.
Out Of Control
One of The Avengers: Age Of Ultron set pieces that we know of is a huge battle in a snow-covered forest somewhere out in Europe (we assume). It looks like the Avengers are all going to be present, seeing as Bruce Banner collapses to the ground in his human form. What the hell could have done that?
All By Herself
Black Widow is standing in an empty office area, presumably a Stark facility that's either renovated after the Ultron attack hinted at in the beginning, or a safe house kept in case of emergencies. Emergencies like a sentient robotic entity targeting you and your friends for death.
Tools Of The Trade
Remember how we mentioned the experiments that turn Wanda and Pietro Maximoff into Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver respectively? Well now's a good time to have a bad feeling about what those tools are being used for. Could this push the PG-13 limits that The Avengers always comfortably inhabits?
Father Ultron
Knowing that Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver are going to be baddies for a little while isn't what surprises us about this moment. What really makes us say "WTF" is all of the equipment and lab setup that Ultron has his hands on. Does he take over Avengers Tower, or does he steal equipment and set up somewhere more underground?
Waterproofed Drones
A traditional shortcut to defeating a robotic enemy is, in most cases, submerging them in water. Usually, they'd be shorted out by the water, and the problem would be solved. Of course, most robots aren't built by someone as smart and forward-planning as Ultron. This isn't going to be easy.
About Face
Time for a double WTF moment, as two big questions arise: what is everyone looking at that's got them so worried (and makes Thor drop his hammer)? And does anyone else think they've spotted a moment with the Black Widow stunt double wearing one of those creepy masks? Damn you, Jeremy Renner!
Change Of Venue #1
With Avengers Tower more than likely compromised, there's not going to be a lot of places Tony Stark will be able to call home base. Is this image showing us Stark and friends retreating to the Helicarrier in order to figure out their next move? Also, shot in the dark on this one, is that Dr. Selvig in the back left corner?
Change Of Venue #2
Here comes another shot in the dark when it comes to the safe houses of The Avengers: is this shot telling us that Tony might be revisiting an old friend in Tennessee? After all, he did give Harley a full lab set up, and it'd be a great call back to Iron Man 3
Nick's New Hat
Where has Nick Fury been ever since handing over the reins of SHIELD to Director Coulson? Wherever it was, it look like they had an excellent selection of wardrobe choices. Also, why'd he switch back to the eyepatch? The sunglasses looked kind cool at the end of Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
Quicksilver Lends A Hand?
Watching Quicksilver in motion, we see him dispatch of an Ultron drone with great ease. But does this make him an ally to The Avengers at this point, or is he saving Cap for some sort of anti-American demonstration? Either way, it's good to know that this Quicksilver's powers will look unique from those of the Days Of Future Past variant we saw this year.
Flash-Cap
We've previously pointed out that Captain America's shield actually breaks in the trailer for The Avengers: Age Of Ultron; and we're already curious about how that could even happen. But more importantly, as we see here, is the question of whether or not Cap is seeing his life flash before his eyes or not.
Thor'd Out
While a portion of our audience is undoubtedly fixated on the screencap of Chris Hemsworth wet and shirtless, others have moved passed that point to ask just why Thor looks so pained in the water. Did he forget to check the temperature after someone drew it for him?
A Widow's Tears
Why is Black Widow so sad when touching hands with The Hulk? It's not like we want her to hold a grudge against the Hulk after their little mishap on the helicarrier in The Avengers, but hardly anything rattles Natasha. Yet there she is, emotionally compromised. Maybe The Hulk is leaving Earth after all?
The HYDRA School Of Dance
It's kind of random to put a shot of a ballet lesson in a trailer for a blockbuster like The Avengers: Age Of Ultron. But what fun would it be if you could explain each shot from a teaser trailer? More importantly, is that Baron Von Strucker on the piano, and is this lesson one that includes Scarlet Witch? Is Marvel planning a dance school spinoff?
If there's one emotion that Black Widow could exhibit in order to show you just how dismal the situation was, it would have to be that of absolute and panicked fear. Not very often do you see Natasha Rominov cower in fear, much less retreat from something she's fighting. Surprisingly, she does both in The Avengers: Age Of Ultron, and we'll be able to see the results on May 1, 2015.
