Abrams Gives Cloverfield Hint
For a movie shrouded in mystery, the clues for 1-18-08 (aka Cloverfield) are really starting to pop up. Of course, that’s not adding any clarity for the movie’s story; just giving us more to work with.
The latest: J.J. Abrams dropped AICN a line yesterday. In typical Abrams style, the producer told us that as much as we think we know, we don’t know half as much as we think:
Regarding the online stuff you posted: yeah, we're doing some fun stuff on the web. But, obviously, if the movie doesn't kick some massive ASS, who gives a rat's about what's online? So as you can imagine, we're focusing mostly on THAT. For what it's worth, the only site of ours that people have even FOUND is the 1-18-08.com site. The others (like the Ethan Haas sites) have nothing to do with us.”
I can’t figure out if Abrams is praising online readers or slapping us with a glove – there are more sites out there, so go find them. I know this means I’ll be digging through the trailer, now available online, to see if there are any clues for additional websites.
As for the Ethan Haas sites not being related to this project… When we first reported them I pondered where they came from, because there is no clear link to what little we know about the movie. Now it appears they aren’t part of the overall scheme – or are they? Last summer Abrams and his company spent a lot of time disavowing knowledge of websites involved in “The Lost Experience”. Is that what he’s doing here? (probably not, but the Ethan Haas sites are the primary evidence for a Lovecraftian inspired movie, which is what I’d love for this to be).
More to come… I’m sure.
