Looks like Oscar winner Adrien Brody will be trying on a new hat: action star. Although he’s shown his scope from dramas to thrillers, action flicks are uncharted territory for the tall, thin, and handsome Brody. Before you shout “sell out,” realize that this is an indie pic, executive produced by Brody himself.

The flick is called The Courier and the scriptwriting team of Michael Brandt and Derek Haas have penned the story. Variety reports that action vet Russell Mulcahy is set to direct. The film will follow Brody as a savvy courier who must deliver a briefcase of mysterious content to some unseemly person whose whereabouts are unknown. Brody will careen across the country as he is followed by cops gone bad and gangsters vying for the insides of that case.

Although this is technically an indie movie, produced by Archlight Films, the players sound pretty big-guns-go-gettem action oriented to me. Brandt and Haas not only contributed to Wanted, but also to 3:10 To Yuma, and 2 Fast, 2 Furious. While the director boasts such blow up action flicks as The Scorpion King 2, Resident Evil: Extinction and the upcoming Crash and Burn. But, even if Brody is in over his Oscar-winning head, he’s such a gem of an actor that you know he’ll pull through and we’ll all go “I hardly knew ye, Adrien Brody.”
