Actors Guild Rewards Slumdog, Penn, Streep
The Screen Actor's Guild prides itself on accurately predicting any number of Oscar winners, which is the only conceivable reason it gave Slumdog Millionaire its Best Ensemble prize tonight. Sure, the movie may well be the best of the year according to some, but the best acting of the year? No way.
Other than that, though, SAG stuck to the obvious and deserving choices. Sean Penn took home Best Actor for Milk, and joked about what the media will make of it, turning the Oscars into a horse race between him and Mickey Rourke. Consider it done, Sean. Meryl Streep seemed genuinely moved to win Best Actress for Doubt, while Gary Oldman was equally moved to be accepting Best Supporting Actor on behalf of Heath Ledger. And Kate Winslet, providing no help in predicting the Oscars at all, won Best Supporting Actress for The Reader-- a role for which she's nominated as lead actress at the Oscars.
That was it for the movie winners, though you a find a list of the TV winners as well below (thanks, Awards Daily) In terms of predicting the Oscars, SAG may have struck out this year more than usual. Kate Winslet obviously won't win for Supporting Actress, and may very well unseat Streep in lead. Ledger's a safe bet, but Penn really will have to fight off Rourke in lead actor. And as for Slumdog? Well, as the movie itself says... it is written.
