Best Buy has been doing the exclusive Blu-ray thing for a while now, having partnered for Blu-ray versions of Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy and The Firm, amongst others. Now, the home of the blueshirts is introducing three classic comedies onto the high-def format. On September 25th, Best Buy will debut Blu-ray versions of Airplane!, Plains, Trains and Automobiles, and The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad.
Honestly, comedies generally aren't the sort of films that demands insane visual fidelity, so whether it's worth an upgrade if you already own these will be a personal call. However, if you're a comedy fan and don't already own them, these are three movies that absolutely should be in your collection, so if you haven't gotten around to picking one or more of them up, this September you'll have no excuse. There's also something to be said about being able to watch 20-year-old movies in the very best quality that you can. If nothing else, you can toss out that VHS copy of Planes, Trains and Automobiles you've had on life support since 1994.
The real draw here will be snazzy copies of the films themselves at which that you can spend future years laughing your ass off. I mean, the sheer potential quotation quotient alone is mind boggling. And that's not even counting the fact that PT&A is not only one of the best comedies ever made, but I'd argue one of the best films ever made. There's a reason I rewatch it on a yearly basis, and John Candy was never better than as shower-curtain-ring salesman Del Griffith. Here's the rundown for each disc.
