The Weinstein Company is quickly putting themselves on the map, after heads Bob & Harvey's infamous departure from Miramax. Wherever they go, acclaim follows, and they have already racked up several Oscar nods this year for Transamerica and Mrs. Henderson Presents.
Even one of their worst movies, Hoodwinked!, took in a decent pile of cash at the box office on its opening weekend. According to Hollywood Reporter, they are rounding up their second CG-animated comedy for a pitch called Escape From Planet Earth, written by Hoodwinked! creators Tony Leech and Cory Edwards. Leech will also direct.
The pitch is about a prison break from Area 51, a government facility where the inmates are a group of imprisoned aliens from across the universe. While the original idea by Leech may get some people excited, I think I'll be skipping this one. It's bad enough that there's a Hoodwinked! 2 looming overhead. I'll stick with Pixar for my animation needs, thankyouverymuch.
