Denis Leary has been making the press rounds on behalf of his FX show Rescue Me, which prepares to air its final episode on FX tonight. But as is the case with any actor involved in a major film property (preferably one with superheroes as lead characters), Leary also had to field questions regarding Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man, which features the comedian as iconic police captain George Stacey.
As expected, Leary didn’t reveal much to StarPulse about the anticipated franchise reboot, which hits theaters on July 3, 2012. He did say that Webb’s vision differs in tone from Sam Raimi’s trilogy, opting for a darker mood. He praised young co-stars Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone, commenting on their maturity and professionalism. He said Garfield’s training as a gymnast came in handy for the film’s multiple stunts, and told the site that Stone baked for him while on set.
So yeah, not much to reveal. But it was interesting that Leary revealed he wasn’t much of a Spider-Man fan at all. His wife’s a bigger fan of the character. Even his old friend Jeff Garlin, of HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm, was more excited by Leary’s participation in the Marvel franchise than Leary was, himself. He tells a funny story about Garlin saving a comic book frame of Stacey from the original Spider-Man books and showing Leary because he’d always believed the two shared a resemblance.
“People take it very seriously,” Leary joked. And he’s right. Just wait until Marvel hears Leary’s response to the question of whether he’s bothered that a studio would try and reboot a franchise that’s barely a decade old.
“Oh, I didn’t give a sh*t. I’m not really a Spider-Man fan. I’m more of a Batman guy,” Leary said.
Think he’ll have that opinion reversed in time for the press junket?
