Andrew Adamson Talks Shrek 3

Andrew Adamson, one of the directors behind the spectacularly successful Shrek movies, recently spoke to Sci-Fi Wire about his involvement with the third entry which is due out in 2007. Andrew stepped down from the director's chair for Shrek 3, jumping instead at the enviable chance to helm fantasy classic The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. Unlike Brian Singer who so tastelessly abandoned the third part of his X-Men franchise, Adamson is staying close to the Shrek story, one which is near and dear to his heart.

"It's a story that I'm [emotionally] attached to", said Adamson, "and I'm working very closely with Aron Warner, who was the producer of the first two films and is back for the third, and with the directors, Raman Hui and Chris Miller, who were both on the last two films as well [in different capacities]." You paying attention, Singer? That's how it's done.

How exactly is Adamson involved? "I think I'll be listed as an executive producer and probably get a 'Story By' credit. I'm really trying not to get too involved in the writing this time. The writing is something I love. It's the time when anything is possible, but to me it's also the darkest time, the hardest part. It's the time when you only have yourself to blame for your own limitations. I find that once I get into writing it sucks me into all sorts of pits of despair." I feel the same way every time I sit down to write a CB new story.

Adamson also spilled a few beans on the movie's plot. It centers around Shrek taking over royal duties for his ailing father-in-law, the King of Far Far Away. Undesirous to take the role, Shrek sets out to find someone else to sub in: King Arthur. "So it kind of plays with Arthurian legend, and at the same time that Shrek is learning about responsibility," adds Adamson, "He's also dealing with another responsibility that will be coming his way now that he's married and has started to settle down. It's pretty easy to see where we're going with that." Um...couples Christmas shopping? I know that's my biggest fear about getting married. Perhaps he's hinting at a pregnancy followed by a little green bundle of joy, an idea that brings three words to mind: Ogre mood swings.
